We’re listing our sixteen 2nd great grandparents over here in the genealogy corner. Or we were in August. I’m a little late. The point? If anybody else is also researching these same ancestors, maybe they’ll come across this note someday and send me a photo of Grandpa Bart. Could happen …
Here are mine. If/when I write articles about any of these, I’ll come link them later.
The Scots and Irish.
Sophia Travis, 1832-1890, Canada to Michigan. (Her name passed along in the family as a middle name. Pronounced with long I sof-eye-ya.)
Millan McMillan 1827-1901, Canada to Michigan. (And what were his parents thinking when they named him.)
Amanda Pelton, 1801-1889, Canada to Michigan. (Her folks were originally from Massachusetts.)
John McGuffin Sr 1813-1896 (Rumor says he ran away from Mom who was chasing him with a switch and stowed away on a ship at age 9, but records suggest he was closer to 18. Maybe Mom was still chasing him? Ireland to Canada.)
The Norway group. Those who came this way did so about 1878-80.
Marit Endresdatter Moen, 1822-1899, Norway to Wisconsin. (She had some sweet kids, but Great Grandma wasn't one of the sweet ones.)
Hans Steingrimsen Linset, 1818-1899, Norway to Wisconsin. (Steingrimsen spelling is fluid and has several variations.)
Anne Pedersdatter, 1843-, Norway. (Great Grandpa was born the year before they married. Per various sources, not considered scandalous in Norway at the time. You got to the church for the paperwork when you got there.)
Ole Thoresen, 1821-, Norway. (Married Anne when she was 16 and he was something like 39.)
One of these 4 probably gave us our BRCA1 gene mutation.
Lucy Brookins, 1815-1871, Vermont. (Our link to Wm & Mary Brewster. Died of cancer but we don't know what kind.)
Robert Parks, 1812-1878, Vermont. (Co-wrote a semi-well-known history of Wells, Vermont and talked a lot about the men but didn't say much about his wife. Did she have a sense of humor? Did she make good apple pie? Did he love her? No clues.)
Lydia Whitmore, 1812-1842, Vermont. (Cause of death unknown. Had 2 children.)
Alonzo Hubbard, 1812-bef 1860, Vermont to NY. (A shoemaker. Seems to have died between 1855-1860 although many on Ancestry have mushed him together with another Alonzo — probably a cousin — and combined their details all this way and that. Cause of death unknown.)
Many DNA links to descendants of these 4 but lack paper proof of relationship, so far.
Polly Taylor, 1795-1885, Upstate NY to Wisconsin. (Late in life could have been called the "House Hopper" as she moved from one child's home to the next.)
Benjamin Allen, 1794-1857, MA to Upstate NY to Wisconsin. (Such a unique name. So easy to track down. Not.)
Cassandana, Abt 1775-Bef 1830, RI to Upstate NY. (Voted most likely to have name corrected to "Cassandra" by overzealous name correctors.)
Barton Carver, Abt 1775-1845, RI to Upstate NY. (I have a paper bearing both his signature and the signature of James Fenimore Cooper. Nice, but what I really want is a paper that says my great grandpa is his son.)
